CHOISEUL POLICE INVESTIGATING THE RAPE OF AN 8 YEAR OLD!

Murder, rape, larceny etc are among criminal phenomena that send the blood of Choiseulians boiling! And this was just the case last week, when the Police detained a young man for questioning for the alleged rape an 8 year girl.

The mother of the victim who is from Mongouge told the POWERHOUSE that the child was spending time with the father in Dacretin when it was observed that she was bleeding. She was taken to the hospital and doctors confirmed that she was in fact raped.

The mother also told me she was angry and disappointed that the perpetrator was at large, even when, she claimed, that he was positively identified by the victim. However, a source close to the police explained that with the lack of an eyewitness and/or circumstantial/forensic evidence, they were proceeding legally by having the child identify the accused in a line-up.

A young man from a nearby Area is helping the police in their investigations.

The young man who is well-known to the community and who is also believed to be mentally challenged is alleged to be behaving very “strangely”, claiming that he does not know anything about the rape.

Police investigations are ongoing!

STATISTICS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE:

"The effects of child sexual abuse can include depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, propensity to further victimization in adulthood, and physical injury to the child, among other problems. Sexual abuse by a family member is a form of incest, and can result in more serious and long-term psychological trauma, especially in the case of parental incest.

"The global prevalence of child sexual abuse has been estimated at 19.7% for females and 7.9% for males, Using the available data, the highest prevalence rate of child sexual abuse was found in Africa (34.4%), primarily because of high rates in South Africa; Europe showed the lowest prevalence rate (9.2%); America and Asia had prevalence rates between 10.1% and 23.9%. In North America, approximately 15% to 25% of women and 5% to 15% of men were sexually abused when they were children.

"Most sexual abuse offenders are acquainted with their victims; approximately 30% are relatives of the child, most often brothers, fathers, uncles or cousins; around 60% are other acquaintances such as 'friends' of the family, babysitters, or neighbors; strangers are the offenders in approximately 10% of child sexual abuse cases. Most child sexual abuse is committed by men; studies show that women commit 14% to 40% of offenses reported against boys and 6% of offenses reported against girls. Most offenders who sexually abuse pre-pubescent children are pedophiles". (SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA)
