Member
of Parliament in the Opposition Richard Frederick, who was today ordered to
surrender his driver’s licence and pay $2,000 in damages for driving without
due care, is planning to file an appeal against the magistrate’s judgment.
Frederick
appeared before Magistrate Velon John in Gros Islet today, Wednesday, March 6,
2013 where he was found guilty and ordered to pay $2,000 in damages in 15 days.
He was also disqualified from driving for the next 40 days.
Frederick
is to surrender his driver’s licence by Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 9:00. But
this may not happen since as Frederick is appealing the case.
According
to reports, the accident occurred on May 26, 2012 about 11:15 pm on the John
Compton Highway, near the Choc roundabout.
Reports
further stated that the two drivers, Frederick and Josiah Alexander, were both
travelling towards Gros Islet, where the two lanes merge as one near Saamans
Park.
Alexander
was on the outer lane and Frederick was on the inner lane, and as Frederick
allegedly attempted to overtake Alexander’s vehicle the two made contact.
St.
Lucia News Online understands that Alexander’s vehicle crashed into a tree
about 100 feet from the collision.
When
the matter was taken to court, it was found that Frederick was the driver at
fault and as such he was found culpable and fined $2,000 or 15 days in prison
and suspension of his driver’s licence for 40 days.
Frederick
has stated that he will appeal the decision of the court.
Frederick
was the minister for Physical Planning, Housing, Urban Renewal and Local
Government under the previous United Workers Party administration.
